Designed by Cal-earth in association with SSH International. Developer URC described the resort as a unique eco resort development featuring a 5-star luxury resort with chalets for sale, a handicraft souq and a research center. The resort would be located in the remote village of Shuwaimiyah in the South of Oman, a fishing village situated on a 30 kilometer virgin beach on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
Early in the history of the project, back when we headed the project's branding and graphics at SSH International, we immediately saw that the name 'Shuwaimiyah' could not work. It was too long & unpronounceable for the average English speaking tourist. So we researched and found a wealth of cultural references based on the maritime traditions, reminiscent of old folk tales of Sinbad and the lore of his adventures. That's when we uncovered the name 'Junoot', as the original and forgotten name of the area. We proposed the brand name, and URC loved it.

URC decided to go with an ecological approach for designing the project, and have done a prototype in the methods of the late Persian architect, Nader Khalili. Now that the project is close to realisation, we at A+design are simply delighted the name “Junoot” has stuck for the whole duration of the resort development and all its iterations. We’re especially proud to be associated with the first eco resort in the region. To read more on the project visit the Cal-Earth and URC website.

Years after this ambitious project was publicized, it appears that there have been two pilot projects started, and they show potential success. CNN today has reported on the pilot project in Qatar along with some pictures [Link]. Now imagine this project on a huge scale here in Kuwait, much like the rendering below, as a river of regenerative greenery that is also a factory for food, clean energy, fresh water and salt. Hope at last?
